Three BS Biology student researches made it to the finals of the National Research competition organized by the Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) and received the top awards. This year’s theme “People at the Center of Health and Health Research” speaks of the importance given to the promotion of people’s health through development and formulation of solution to health problems.
The researches “Anticoagulant and Antiangiogenic Potentials of Clarias gariepinus Burch. (African Catfish)” by Rhealyn V. De Guzman, Ralph Angelo R. Abanto, Brielle Shane P. Flores and “Bioactivity of Commonly Used Medicinal Plants by T’bolis of South Cotabato” by Jaybee M. Baay, Sheila D. Buhian, Anabelle T. Diocales were chosen as entries of Region XII for the Research Oral Presentation. Rhealyn V. De Guzman and Jaybee M. Baay presented their researches impressively. The winners were chosen based on the technical merit of the paper, impact of the actual presentation to the audience and the knowledge of the presenter on the study as evidenced by the ability to answer queries of the judges and the audience. The novelty of the research findings on the anticoagulant and antiangiogenic potentials of African catfish garnered the first place. Researches from University of Santo Tomas and Cebu Doctors University ranked second and third, respectively.
Meanwhile, the study “Antiangiogenic Activity and Toxicity of Cresentia cujete. (Calabash)” by Jaime P. Guerrero, March Jane O. Palermo, Abigail U. Cellona was declared 3rd placer in the DOST-PCHRD Gruppo Medica award for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis in Herbal Medicine from among the thirty-five entries nationwide. The members of the screening committee identified the merit of the study based on its relevance, potential for a safe and effective agent for treatment of cancer, creativity and originality of research work and scientific quality. Pharmacy students of San Pedro College and University of Immaculate Conception garnered the 1st and second places, respectively.
The researchers, together with their research adviser, Dr. Mary Mae M. Cheung, received the plaques of recognition and cash awards during the culmination of the 7th Philippine National Health Research System Week on August 9, 2013 at Plaza Del Norte Convention Center, Laoag City.
