Notre Dame of Dadiangas University (NDDU) faculty researchers clinched 3rd Place for Best Research Paper at the 4th General Santos City National Statistics Month (NSM) Research Forum on October 16, 2026, at the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges (RMMC) Competency Enhancement Center, presenting a framework for a mobile-enabled earthquake early warning system designed to protect the university community.

The study, titled โ€œFramework for a Mobile-Enabled Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) for Notre Dame of Dadiangas University,โ€ was written by Dr. Lorelyn F. Adrales, MBA, DIT, who worked with co-authors Aileen Coronado, MBA, MIT, as well as Engr. Edgar B. Manubag, Ph.D.

The framework proposed an early warning setup that delivers earthquake alerts to the phones of NDDU students, faculty, as well as staff, aiming to give the campus a few critical seconds to respond before strong shaking arrives.

The paper first ranked 4th in the preliminary evaluation of abstract submissions last August before climbing one spot after the final presentations.

The study carried added weight for the university, coming months after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake jolted the city on June 8, 2026, leaving 11 General Santos City residents dead with 142 others injured on the first day of classes.

Engr. Manubag thanked the City Statistics Committee of General Santos City, the Philippine Statistics Authority, LGU GenSan, the CPMO, as well as RMMC for providing a platform that supports evidence-based research.

Another NDDU faculty paper, Dr. Leizle B. Coronicaโ€™s study on imposex in coastal gastropods within the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, also advanced to the forum after placing 6th in the preliminary round.

A third NDDU entry, a study on financial literacy, risk tolerance, stock market participation, as well as digital financial platform use among Millennials and Generation Z by NDDU faculty Dr. Joanne J. Java, DBA, CPA, with Gonzalo B. Ruales, Jr., MBA, CPA, ranked 15th in the same round.

This yearโ€™s forum carried the theme โ€œTUKLAS PILIPINAS: Statistics as Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism,โ€ forming part of the cityโ€™s celebration of the 37th National Statistics Month.

The NSM is held every October under Presidential Proclamation No. 647, s. 1990, which seeks to raise awareness of the value of statistics across different sectors of society.
